Since I’m on a deep-sea kick, here’s a bit about my new favorite jellyfish.
Aequorea macrodactyla
”Like an underwater spaceship, a jellyfish, Aequorea macrodactyla, travels through the warm clear waters of the Celebes Sea in the southern Philippines.
The jellyfish was one of thousands of specimens photographed during a three-week expedition led by the Census of Marine Life to explore this highly diverse area.”
It’s a bioluminescent organism, meaning it produces its own light source. “The luminescent system of this species consists of a green fluorescent protein (GFP) and one or more aequorins.” (Aequorins are proteins isolated from luminescent jellyfish.)
Sweeeeet.
