For those of you who don’t know, I have a slight zebra obsession. It’s been this way since I was about four years old. When other little girls were dying to have ponies, all I wanted was a zebra. I would totally settle for a zony, though.
“Most zebra/horse and zebra/pony hybrids are bred using solid color horses/ponies. When you breed a zebra to a patched horse or pony, the zebra markings only show up on the colored areas. The white areas mask out any colors or markings.”
“A horse has 64 chromosomes; a zebra has 44. The zorse that results from cross-breeding will have a number of chromosomes that is somewhere in between.
‘The smaller number of chromosomes has to be on the male side,’ said Lesley Barwise-Munro, a veterinary surgeon in Alnwick, Northumberland.”
Side note, hybrids are invariably sterile. I assume that’s how it is for all hybrids, as the genetics seem to get very complicated in the first place. But oh, my, gosh…HOW CUTE.
